Norman residents can set out old furniture, appliances and other bulk items for free curbside pickup starting Saturday, Sept. 26, as the city's annual Fall Residential Cleanup begins.

The five-week program runs through Oct. 24, with each Saturday assigned to residents based on their regular polycart service day, according to the city's cleanup information page. Monday customers go first on Sept. 26, followed by Tuesday customers on Oct. 3, Wednesday on Oct. 10, Thursday on Oct. 17 and Friday on Oct. 24.

All items must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the assigned Saturday. Residents can start placing items out one week before their collection day.

What the city won't take

The city will not pick up yard waste, remodeling or demolition debris such as broken concrete or shingles, junk cars, or hazardous materials including tires, batteries and paint. Appliances containing Freon must have a certified technician's tag showing the Freon was properly removed.

Don't use polycarts, wagons or wheelbarrows as containers. Keep items away from power lines and transformers.

Storm debris stays separate

July 4 storm debris pickup remains underway, and the city has asked residents to keep storm debris in a separate pile from fall cleanup items. Chris Mattingly, the city's Utilities Department director, said in an Aug. 21 announcement that "there may be some overlap with the end of those collections and the beginning of ours for the Fall Residential Cleanup … We want to encourage customers to keep piles separate."

For storm debris questions, residents can call the Streets Division at 405-329-2524.

Free drop-off and hazardous waste options

Residents who prefer to haul items themselves can use the Transfer Station at 3901 S. Chautauqua, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at no charge on each of the five cleanup Saturdays. A current City of Norman utility bill is required for free entry. Commercial construction debris is not included and will be charged the normal gate rate.

The city's Household Hazardous Waste Facility also offers free appointments for items like paint and batteries. Residents can schedule by calling 405-366-5463. For general cleanup questions, call 405-329-1023.
