Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer threw two touchdown passes in a 23-15 road win at Mississippi State on Saturday, Oct. 24.

The victory in Starkville was the first-ever meeting between the two programs, according to OU's athletics department. The Sooners improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in SEC play while piling up a season-high 467 yards of total offense.

Mateer completed 22 of 29 passes for 283 yards and added 37 yards on nine carries. He connected with Isaiah Sategna III on a 36-yard scoring strike to cap a 14-play, 96-yard drive just before halftime, giving OU a 10-0 lead. On the Sooners' first possession of the second half, Mateer found tight end Rocky Beers for a 32-yard touchdown to push the advantage to 17-0.

The ground game came alive, too. Oklahoma entered the contest averaging 92.5 rushing yards per game but ran for 184 against the Bulldogs.

Five passing plays of 15 or more yards accounted for 191 of OU's 283 passing yards. Two produced touchdowns and two others converted third downs. Kicker Tate Sandell hit field goals of 42, 30 and 38 yards.

Mississippi State (4-3, 2-3 SEC) answered in the third quarter on an 18-yard trick-play pass from tight end Sam West to Camden Capehart. It was the Bulldogs' first touchdown in eight quarters, dating to their Oct. 3 game against Alabama.

The Bulldogs made it a one-possession game with 2:10 remaining when Parker Puckett connected with Sanfrisco Magee on a 42-yard touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion. Oklahoma sealed the win by converting back-to-back third downs on the ensuing possession.

"That should have been, probably a four or five-score win. It wasn't," Sooners coach Brent Venables said, according to ESPN's game recap. "But I'm just thankful for the victory."

Venables praised Mateer's performance, saying the quarterback played an excellent game and made great throws.

Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor left the game late in the first quarter after taking a hit while running out of bounds on fourth down. He completed just 2 of 5 passes for 10 yards and took three sacks before exiting. Taylor had been dealing with a foot or toe injury suffered Sept. 26 against Missouri, according to ESPN.

Linebacker Owen Heinecke recorded 10 tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble, according to the SEC's recap. The Sooners converted 8 of 17 third- and fourth-down attempts while the Bulldogs managed just 3 of 16.

Oklahoma hosts South Carolina at 3:15 p.m. C.T. on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on SEC Network.
