Oklahoma forward Kayla Keefer broke the program's single-season goals record Thursday, Oct. 15, scoring her 16th goal in a 2-0 win at Mississippi State.
The junior's milestone came in the 69th minute in Starkville, snapping Whitney Palmer's record of 15 goals that had stood since 2009. The victory also set a program record for most SEC wins in a single season, as the Sooners improved to 10-3-2 overall and 4-3-0 in conference play.
Keefer, who was named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Midseason Watch List on Sept. 30, had tied Palmer's mark with a hat trick against LSU on Sept. 24. She finished with four shots, including her record-breaking goal.
Elle Canty got the Sooners on the board first. The midfielder played a left-footed strike into the box in the 39th minute that deflected and crossed the goal line. Officials reviewed the play and upheld the goal, giving Oklahoma a 1-0 halftime lead.
Keefer's record-breaker provided insurance. Both goals were unassisted.
Goalkeeper Callie Sullivan tied a season and career high with five saves, including three in the second half. Defender Ally Laccinole cleared a header off the goal line during a Mississippi State push, helping Oklahoma post its first shutout in league play this season and its fifth overall.
The Sooners dominated set pieces in the second half, taking six corner kicks to zero for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State (8-2-4) suffered its first loss in SEC play.
Claire Curran and Fernanda Dantas each made their first starts of the season.
Oklahoma reached double-digit wins for the third straight season, only the second time in program history after the 2014-16 stretch. After the LSU win in September, head coach Matt Mott said the team was locked in on the chase. "We're really hungry to score goals," Mott told Sooners Wire after that Sept. 24 victory. "We got a lot of games left. We'll look at them at the end, but proud of the team for sure, and we just gotta keep going."
The Sooners complete their Mississippi road swing at Ole Miss on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m.
