No. 11 Oklahoma lost 17-10 at Michigan on Sept. 12, after a fourth-quarter interception dropped the Sooners to 1-1 heading into the teeth of their SEC schedule.

Michigan cornerback Jyaire Hill stepped in front of a John Mateer pass at the Sooners' 30-yard line and returned it 24 yards to the Oklahoma 6 with 8:40 left, ESPN reported. Two plays later, Jordan Marshall punched it in from a yard out to give Michigan a 17-10 lead it would not relinquish.

The Sooners' offense managed just 100 rushing yards and converted only 3 of 13 third downs, according to ESPN's postgame report.

Mateer completed 52% of his passes and finished with 234 total yards and one touchdown, per the Detroit Free Press. His final stretch was rough: one completion on his last eight attempts for 3 passing yards and the interception.

Head coach Brent Venables, asked about the Sooners' blocking at his postgame news conference, said it was "obviously not good enough."

Oklahoma trailed 10-0 at halftime after Bryce Underwood broke a 38-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Trey Butkowski added a 40-yard field goal. The Sooners were scoreless in the first half for the first time since 2021, the Free Press reported.

Wide receiver Rocky Beers led the Sooners with six catches for 94 yards. Running back Lloyd Avant received just nine carries all game, per Yahoo Sports.

Michigan's defense recorded eight tackles for loss, three sacks and forced two turnovers in front of an announced crowd of 111,240. Punter Cam Brown pinned six punts inside the 20-yard line, and the Sooners started two drives on their own 1.

The Sooners also lost standout linebacker Kip Lewis to a right knee injury in the first quarter. Lewis, a fifth-year senior who led Oklahoma with 76 tackles last season, slammed his helmet on the sideline after hobbling off the field. He briefly returned wearing a knee brace before leaving again and appearing in street clothes by late in the first half.

Mateer struck a defiant tone after the loss, saying the team and the university need him and that he believes he will deliver. Venables said the schedule ahead does not change the team's approach, noting the Sooners had a chance to tie the game late and that there is no "worry or doubt or fatalistic mindset" in the locker room.

Oklahoma hosts New Mexico on Sept. 19, before traveling to No. 2 Georgia on Sept. 26 in Athens. Texas and Ole Miss follow after that.
