Cleveland County Election Board representatives will set up in North Dining at Moore Norman Technology Center's Franklin Road campus Sept. 15 to register new voters and help existing voters update their information.

The drive runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the campus, located at 4701 12th Ave. NW in Norman. It is open to students, staff and the public, rain or shine.

Sept. 15 is National Voter Registration Day, a nonpartisan civic holiday observed since 2012. More than 6.5 million Americans have registered to vote or updated their registration on the day since it began, according to NASS data reported by the Gazebo Gazette.

The National Association of Secretaries of State participates in the annual effort. NASS President Steve Hobbs, who also serves as Washington's secretary of state, said in an Aug. 31 statement that "registering to vote is the first step in making your voice heard in our democracy."

The Oklahoma State Election Board lists the voter registration deadline for the Nov. 3 general election as Oct. 9 at 5 p.m. The MNTC drive falls 24 days before that deadline.

Oklahoma law requires every voter who votes in person to show proof of identity before receiving a ballot, according to the Oklahoman. Acceptable forms of ID include a state-issued voter identification card, a driver's license or a U.S. passport.

Election board staff will be available at the drive to answer questions about registration status and eligibility, according to MNTC's event announcement.

What's next

The Norman City Council holds a study session at 5 p.m. Sept. 15, the same day as the registration drive. The council's next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 22, at 6:30 p.m.
