Norman families should plan to trick-or-treat Oct. 30 instead of Halloween night this year.

The City of Norman and the Norman Police Department recommended the schedule shift in an announcement published Aug. 24, citing heavy traffic expected from a University of Oklahoma home football game on Oct. 31. The suggested hours are 6 to 8 p.m.

The recommendation is not a mandate. Families who choose to trick-or-treat on Halloween are not prohibited from doing so, but the city urged caution given game-day congestion on Norman streets.

Safety tips for trick-or-treaters

The Norman Police Department offered guidance for pedestrians heading out during fall festivities:

  • Stay in your own neighborhood.
  • Travel in groups with an adult present.
  • Wear bright, easily visible costumes and carry a flashlight.
  • Walk on sidewalks where possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic.
  • Cross only at corners or intersections using traffic signals and crosswalks.
  • Never enter a stranger's home or accept a ride from someone unknown.

Tips for drivers

The city also reminded motorists to:

  • Drive slowly and eliminate distractions in neighborhoods.
  • Use extreme caution in areas with poor street lighting or inclement weather.
  • Enter and exit driveways carefully.
  • Use a designated driver when attending a Halloween party where alcohol is served.
