Norman residents can nominate the athletes, coaches and teams they believe shaped the city's sports history for a new honor.

The Norman Sports Commission opened nominations for the inaugural Norman Sports Hall of Fame induction class, the OU Daily reported Sept. 9. Nominations close Oct. 31.

The hall will recognize accomplishments across youth, amateur, high school, collegiate and professional athletics. Eligible nominees include athletes, coaches, administrators, officials, teams, volunteers, benefactors and others who left a lasting mark on Norman sports.

Trent Brown, executive director of the Norman Sports Commission, said in a statement that the hall belongs to the community and that organizers want residents' help identifying the people and teams who deserve recognition. Brown said sports have long been part of Norman's identity, pointing to championship teams, standout athletes and coaches who shaped Norman sports over the years.

Nomination forms, eligibility criteria and submission guidelines are available at normansportshof.org. The commission has not released detailed eligibility requirements publicly beyond the online portal.

A selection committee representing different areas of Norman's sports community will review the nominations and recommend members for the inaugural class. The commission has not named the committee's members.

The first induction banquet is set for May 2027 at the Young Family Athletic Center, the approximately 122,000-square-foot multi-sport facility on Norman's north side that opened in 2024. The center is a Norman Forward project, funded by a voter-approved 2015 sales tax initiative. It is named after NBA star Trae Young, a Norman native whose family foundation also contributed to the facility.

The venue features eight basketball courts, 12 volleyball courts, 18 pickleball courts and a 74-foot video board. Its aquatic wing includes an eight-lane competition pool and a four-lane warm-up pool.

Ticket and event details for the banquet have not been announced.
