Two students at Norman High School were taken into custody Wednesday, Sept. 16, after school resource officers found three firearms on campus, the Norman Police Department said.

The investigation began after Norman Public Schools administrators received a report that a student may have possessed a firearm, according to the Norman Transcript. School resource officers and administrators searched the campus, found multiple firearms and secured them.

Norman Public Schools placed the campus on a hold at 12:22 p.m., keeping students and staff in classrooms and designated areas while hallways were cleared, according to the OU Daily. The hold also prevented upperclassmen from leaving campus for lunch. Communications coordinator Jaron Spor shared the district's messages to families with the OU Daily.

The first notification told parents the school was on hold and that additional information would follow. The district's 12:22 p.m. message warned that the hold would affect the upperclassmen lunch period and that students would not be allowed to leave campus.

The hold was lifted at 1:43 p.m. In a follow-up message, the district told families that firearms had been found and two students had been taken into custody. The district also told families that details of the investigation may continue to evolve but that it wanted to share the most current information available.

No charges had been filed as of Wednesday evening.

The ages, grades and identities of the two students have not been released. Sarah Schettler, Norman Police public information officer, told the OU Daily the investigation is ongoing. Criminal charges will be considered once the investigation is complete, Schettler said.

Norman Public Schools said disciplinary action will be taken against the students under the district's Student Code of Conduct. The Norman Police Department posted an update on its official X account at approximately 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, though the full text of that update was not available.

The investigation remains open. Norman police ask anyone with information to contact the department.
