Norman residents can pick up one of 360 free trees on Nov. 20 at Griffin Community Park while supplies last.

The Norman Parks and Recreation Department is hosting its "Right Tree, Right Place" giveaway starting at 9 a.m. at the park, 1001 E. Robinson St., according to the city. Trees will be handed out first-come, first-served until all 360 are gone.

Four species will be available: Little Gem Magnolia, Brandywine Red Maple, Bald Cypress and Blue Point Juniper. The trees will range from about 3 feet to 7 feet tall, depending on the species. The city noted that the cypress and maple grow to moderate size and are not appropriate for planting under power lines, while the magnolia and juniper stay relatively compact.

The program is promoted by power companies to increase awareness about keeping trees away from overhead power lines. The city partnered with the Oklahoma Electric Cooperative (OEC), First United Bank of Norman, Grissom Landscape Nursery and the Norman Park Foundation to make the event possible.

City Forester Colin Zink said he will be at the giveaway to answer questions and advise residents on planting practices and tree care.

"Any time you can plant a tree anywhere, it's going to give us those environmental benefits," Zink said, "but we want to make sure that the location is right, to avoid future conflicts."

Zink called this time of year the best to plant a tree. "While it may not look like much is going on aboveground, the root system is growing below ground," he said. That root growth helps a tree establish itself before spring rains arrive.

The city said proper tree placement can reduce summertime electricity bills, increase property values, minimize erosion and reduce pollution.

What to bring

Residents must show proof of Norman residency. A city utility bill or a valid ID with a Norman address will work. Each household is limited to one tree, but neighbors may carpool as long as each person brings identification showing a different address. Trees cannot be reserved, and residents cannot pick up a tree for someone who is not present.

Pickup trucks are ideal for hauling the trees, though Parks Maintenance staff will help fit trees into other vehicles. Recreation center staff will check residents in, ask about their preferred species and hand out an informational card with planting instructions.

Getting there

Residents should enter the park from the main entrance off Robinson Street, traveling westbound. The left turn lane into the park for eastbound traffic on Robinson will be blocked. The Gillis Drive entrance will be closed.

For more information, residents can call 405-366-5472.
