Norman photographers can apply for a new $1,000 grant honoring Dennis Brigham, a former Norman Arts Council president who died in February.

The council opened applications Wednesday, Sept. 30, for the inaugural Dennis Brigham Photography Grant, according to the council's grants page. A Norman photographer will receive the award. Applications close Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11:59 p.m. CST.

Brigham died Feb. 21 at 61.

A fine art photographer, Brigham first experienced photography through his grandfather's Polaroid Land Camera, Model 95, according to the council. He served on the council's board starting in 2017, including on the executive committee and as president. The council described him as someone who would always say he was "just a simple farmer," but whom they knew as much more.

His obituary described him as someone whose "happy place was behind his camera, capturing images that told the story as he saw it in his mind."

Beyond the arts council, Brigham served as district governor of Rotary District 5770, past chairman of the City of Norman Parks Commissioners and on the board of directors for Visit Norman/Norman Sports Council. A celebration of life in April included a gallery showing of his photography.

The grant supports both emerging and established photographers. Funds can cover equipment, travel and exhibition materials, the council said.

A quote featured on the grant page captures Brigham's approach: "With each day, I hope to learn. With each shoot, I hope to grow. With each image, I hope to show you a little slice of my world."

Questions about the grant can be directed to Programs and Development Manager Cher Duncan. Applications are available on the council's grants page.

The same Nov. 11 deadline applies to the council's separate FY 2026/27 Artist Grants program, which offers up to four $2,000 grants across three categories: community project, creative project, and education/travel. Those grants require Norman residency of at least 12 months, and applicants must be 18 or older.
