A girls-only flag football league has arrived in Norman, giving area players from kindergarten through 12th grade an organized place to play.

GirlPower Norman, Oklahoma's only chapter of the national GirlPower Flag Football organization, held a free introductory clinic Aug. 30 at Lions Park, as the Norman Transcript reported. General manager Jennifer Keith-Watts said the event was about showing local girls the sport is open to them.

"There's a lot of girls that want to play this game and they don't have an opportunity and now you have an opportunity to play outside of your front yard," Keith-Watts told the Norman Transcript.

No experience is required.

Keith-Watts's father, J.C. Watts, was a quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners from 1976 to 1980. He led the Sooners to consecutive Orange Bowl victories and was named the game's Most Valuable Player both times, according to Britannica. He went on to play professionally in the Canadian Football League for the Ottawa Rough Riders and Toronto Argonauts. Keith-Watts's brother, Trey Watts, played college football at Tulsa and now manages a GirlPower league in the Dallas area. Both helped run drills at the Aug. 30 clinic.

The fall season runs Sundays from Sept. 27 through Nov. 15 at Lions Park Ball Field, 450 South Flood Ave., according to the league's official website. The eight-game season includes an official GirlPower jersey, certified officials, weekly awards and a Championship Night to close the year.

Keith-Watts said GirlPower Flag Football is the largest girls-only league in the country. 68,847 girls participated in high school flag football during the 2024-25 school year, according to NFHS's 2024-25 survey. The sport is scheduled to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games.

The league welcomes players from Norman, Moore, Noble, Newcastle, Blanchard, Oklahoma City and surrounding communities. Registration is open at girlpowerflag.com/girlpower-norman-ok/ or by calling (405) 206-8771.
