A Norman father and his 4-year-old son at the center of an Amber Alert were found dead in Gainesville, Texas, on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Gainesville Police Chief Kevin Phillips initially said investigators believed the bodies were those of Caleb Furley and his son, Andres “Harry” Furley, pending positive identification. KTEN reported Oct. 15 that Dallas County medical-examiner records identified both. How they died had not been confirmed, the station reported. Texas Rangers are assisting Gainesville police with the investigation.
The case began when Caleb Furley failed to return Andres to the boy's mother in Norman on Sunday, Oct. 11, according to KTEN. An Amber Alert was issued Tuesday, Oct. 13, the Norman Transcript reported. An arrest warrant for child stealing was also filed, according to Fox 56.
At about 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 14, Gainesville police officers responded to a call in the 1300 block of North Grand Avenue from a relative of the father and son, according to the press release. The relative said the pair had been seen at a local business in the 1500 block of North Grand Avenue on Monday, Oct. 12, at about 3 p.m.
The department had already received a call about that sighting. A caller reported contact with a man accompanied by a child and deemed the encounter suspicious, the press release stated. An officer searched the area with the help of a drone but did not find them.
On the morning of Oct. 14, after no new leads, a Gainesville police investigator went to the business to review surveillance footage from Oct. 12. The footage showed what appeared to be the father and child walking away from the area. The investigator began searching the surrounding area.
An investigator found a deceased man and child while searching the surrounding area.
Court documents obtained by Fox 56 show the parents had separated about a year earlier and did not have a formal custody agreement. They had an arrangement allowing Furley to watch Andres on weekends while the boy's mother worked. Family members told police Furley had stopped attending counseling appointments several weeks before the disappearance, Fox 56 reported.
