Norman middle school students can enter a statewide essay contest announced by Attorney General Gentner Drummond on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
The contest asks sixth- through eighth-graders to write 250 to 350 words on one of three prompts: "My hope for Oklahoma's future is…," "What makes Oklahoma special is…" or "I am proud to be an Oklahoman because…" Submissions are due by Sunday, Nov. 15.
Students at any Oklahoma public, private, charter, virtual or tribal school, along with homeschool participants, are eligible.
A panel of judges will review entries and select top essays. Drummond will then choose one for special recognition, and selected students, their families and their teachers will be invited to a ceremony, according to the attorney general's office. The announcement does not specify a ceremony date or location.
"Our young people should know that their voices matter," Drummond said in the announcement. "I look forward to hearing, in their own words, what they love about Oklahoma and the kind of state they hope to inherit and someday lead."
The Norman Transcript reported the contest is open to students across all 77 Oklahoma counties. Teachers, parents and students with questions can email [email protected].
