Oklahoma will carry a 2-2 record and a 41-13 loss to Georgia into the Red River Rivalry against top-ranked Texas in Dallas.

The Sooners' path got steeper Saturday, Sept. 26, when No. 1 Texas beat No. 14 Tennessee 20-17 in Knoxville, keeping the Longhorns unbeaten at 4-0. Hours later, No. 2 Georgia routed Oklahoma 41-13 at Sanford Stadium in Athens, with Sooners quarterback John Mateer losing two fumbles and throwing an interception in the first half as OU fell behind 28-0.

Both teams have a bye week before the rivalry game.

"To compete and win the game, obviously the number one priority is taking care of the football and certainly we failed miserably in doing that," OU head coach Brent Venables said after the loss, according to ESPN.

Mateer finished 25 of 34 for 231 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Georgia's Chris Cole returned one of Mateer's fumbles 85 yards for a score. The Sooners committed four turnovers total: Mateer's two fumbles and interception in the first half, plus a third-quarter fumble by tight end Rocky Beers.

The loss confirmed a scenario ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum predicted on Sept. 14, after OU's 17-10 loss to Michigan. "They could be sitting there with two losses before the month of September and heading to Red River," Finebaum told The Matt Barrie Show. "And their season may be over that day."

OU is 0-3-1 all-time against Texas when the Longhorns hold the No. 1 ranking, with losses in 1946, 1964 and 1965 and a 15-15 tie in 1984, according to Stormin in Norman. The Sooners haven't beaten a No. 1 team of any kind since topping Missouri 38-17 in the 2007 Big 12 Championship Game.

Under Venables, OU is 1-3 against Texas and has been outscored 136-43 over the last four meetings, according to the OU Daily's preseason preview.

Texas has already knocked off two ranked opponents this season. The Longhorns beat then-No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 in Austin in Week 2 before handling Tennessee on Sept. 26. Defensive end Colin Simmons tied the program sack record with five against the Volunteers, according to the AP. "We win big games around here, we do. I know we don't win them all, but we won a lot of them," Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said after the win.

Quarterback Arch Manning completed 14 of 19 passes for 201 yards with one interception against Tennessee and was sacked six times, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Wide receiver Parker Livingstone, Manning's former roommate and one of his top targets at Texas, transferred to Oklahoma in the offseason. When asked at SEC Media Days in July about facing Livingstone in Dallas, Sarkisian said, "I hope we kick his ass. It's the Red River Rivalry, you know what I mean? He chose to go there."

Oklahoma cornerback Eli Bowen said after the Georgia loss that the Sooners cannot let the defeat define their season.

Kickoff for the Red River Rivalry is Saturday, Oct. 10, in Dallas.
