Five musicians from North Carolina brought a jazz-fusion set built on one rule to Norman on Sept. 21 and 22: say yes to every idea.

Everything Yes, a band that blends jazz with funk, gospel, progressive rock and hip-hop, played two free concerts during the two-day visit. The Norman Music Institute at 2901 Broce Drive hosted the Monday evening show, with doors opening at 7 p.m. The Blanchard Performing Arts Center held a community concert Tuesday afternoon, with doors at 12:30 p.m.

The Norman-based nonprofit Oklahoma House of Music organized all four of the band's local appearances, which also included a Lunch and Learn at Midway Deli on Monday morning and a Hang and Jam session at Embassy Suites Norman on Tuesday evening. Every event was free.

The Norman Transcript featured the band ahead of the shows. Everything Yes formed when all five members met while studying jazz at university. The lineup includes drummer Zach Grooves, saxophonists Sean Reeser and Nathan Graybeal, bassist Cole Saip and keyboardist Reggie McNeill.

Grooves runs a YouTube channel under the name ZackGrooves with roughly 445,000 subscribers, giving the group a built-in national audience unusual for a touring jazz act.

"I think we settled on jazz fusion because jazz is a tradition," saxophonist Sean Reeser told the Transcript. He said the band members are passionate about improvisation and collaboration, and whatever genres they each bring become "the fusion part."

Keyboardist McNeill told the Transcript the band's name reflects how they write. No idea gets rejected outright. The group develops and refines every suggestion a member brings.

The Norman stop was part of the band's "Music of Volume Three" U.S. tour, which includes dates in Nashville, New Orleans, Austin, Chicago and other cities before a European leg with stops at London's Jazz Cafe and the Stockholm Jazz Festival.

Oklahoma House of Music, which organized the Norman visit, says it has hosted more than 250 events featuring nearly 100 guest artists across Oklahoma, including Grammy, Oscar and Tony winners.
