Norman drivers heading east on Lindsey Street lost a lane Aug. 17, as the city began a roughly 90-day project to recoat the Lindsey Water Tower.
The closure affects the southernmost eastbound lane of E. Lindsey Street between George Avenue and Classen Boulevard, near the water tower west of the railroad tracks. The city expects the lane to stay closed through approximately mid-November 2026, weather permitting.
The City of Norman published the traffic advisory on its website Aug. 14 and followed up with a post on its official X account Aug. 16, giving drivers just one day's notice before the closure took effect. The post drew minimal engagement: two likes and one retweet as of Monday morning.
The project adds to an already disrupted week for Norman commuters. James Garner Boulevard closes Aug. 18 between W. Linn Street and W. Apache Street for water line replacement work, a separate project expected to wrap by 5 p.m. Aug. 21.
According to the city's advisory, the Lindsey Street lane will reopen when work pauses for extended periods, with traffic control signage pulled back during those breaks. The city also said it will aim to keep traffic flowing for significant community events and OU home games throughout the project's duration.
Motorists should use alternate routes and follow posted signage in the area.
The city's Utilities Department is managing the Lindsey Street recoating project. Residents with questions can call (405) 366-5443.
The James Garner Boulevard closure, announced separately, is a water line replacement managed by the city and is expected to last only four days.
