Norman residents can start hauling old furniture, appliances and other bulky items to the curb as early as Sept. 19 for the city's annual Residential Fall Cleanup, which runs five consecutive Saturdays beginning Sept. 26.
The City of Norman published the full schedule and rules on its website Aug. 9. All pickups happen on Saturdays, staggered by each household's regular weekday polycart service:
- Saturday, Sept. 26 — households with Monday polycart service
- Saturday, Oct. 3 — Tuesday polycart service
- Saturday, Oct. 10 — Wednesday polycart service
- Saturday, Oct. 17 — Thursday polycart service
- Saturday, Oct. 24 — Friday polycart service
All items must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled Saturday. Residents may set items out no earlier than one week before their pickup date.
What the city won't take
The city's Solid Waste Collection division listed several categories it will not accept: yard waste of any kind, remodeling or demolition debris (concrete, bricks, lumber, sheetrock, shingles), junk cars, and hazardous materials including tires, batteries and paints.
Polycarts, wagons and wheelbarrows cannot be used as containers. Any item containing Freon, such as a refrigerator or window AC unit, must have the refrigerant professionally captured and carry a certified technician's tag proving removal. The city also asks residents not to place items near electrical lines or transformers.
Transfer Station open free on Saturdays
Residents who prefer to haul items themselves can use the Transfer Station at 3901 S. Chautauqua Ave. at no charge on each of the five cleanup Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A current City of Norman utility bill is required for free entry. Commercial construction debris is not part of the residential program and will be charged the normal gate rate.
Hazardous waste disposal
Household hazardous waste, which includes paints, batteries and tires excluded from curbside pickup, can be disposed of free by appointment at the city's Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Residents can schedule a drop-off by calling 405-366-5463.
Storm debris still being cleared
The fall cleanup announcement arrives as the city continues a separate storm debris removal effort following the July 4 wind storm. As of Aug. 11, crews had removed approximately 49,000 cubic yards of storm debris citywide, with that collection expected to wrap up by the end of August.
For general questions about the fall cleanup, residents can call 405-329-1023.
