A Turkish restaurant opened Monday, Sept. 21, in the former Ray's BBQ space on west Lindsey Street, giving Norman diners a new option steps from the University of Oklahoma campus.

Doner Street Turkish Grill is a family operation run by owner Furkan Boros, his wife, his cousin and two other employees. Boros sold his previous restaurant, Istanbul Grill House & Cafe in Edmond, to make the move to Norman, as first reported by the OU Daily.

"I want to be right next to the college, right around the younger generations," Boros told the OU Daily. "I think the younger generations will be more fun to serve."

The 2,537-square-foot brick building, according to the Cleveland County Assessor's Office, has been remodeled with eight tables, five booths, an open kitchen and a self-service ordering kiosk. Lights built into the exterior walls glow yellow-orange at night.

The menu leans on imported ingredients. Boros said 80% of the restaurant's food is imported from European countries including Turkey, Bulgaria and Greece. The restaurant's website describes the cuisine as distinctly Turkish while drawing on Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cooking styles, with dishes featuring grilled meats, rice, grape leaves, feta, herbs and baklava.

Beef and lamb doners, seasoned meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie, anchor the menu and are visible from the open kitchen. The restaurant also serves doner burgers in beef, lamb or chicken. Customers can upgrade any entree to a meal for $4.99, adding a side of fries, salad, onion rings or rice plus a fountain drink.

Boros pointed to the grape leaves as a must-try item, noting they are prepared fresh daily and served warm rather than cold.

The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Ray's BBQ, founded in 2008 by former OU football player Darrol Ray, announced in December 2025 it would relocate to Ed Noble Parkway, leaving the Lindsey Street building open for Boros.

Boros said a Turkish breakfast menu is planned roughly a month after opening, putting a target around late October.
