Community Christian School will lose its Cleveland County sheriff's deputy on campus after county commissioners denied the renewal of the school's resource officer agreement Aug. 17.
The Board of County Commissioners rejected the proposed contract, which would have placed a commissioned deputy at the Norman private school's two campuses for the 2026-2027 school year at a cost of $75,000. That figure represented a $16,000 increase over the school's previous contract, approved in August 2024 at $59,000.
No reason was given.
The commissioners did not publicly state why they denied the renewal, and no vote tally was recorded in the available meeting agenda.
Community Christian School, founded in 1986, serves approximately 950 students from preschool through 12th grade. The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office had assigned Deputy Melton to the school under the prior agreement.
The denial stands in contrast to the board's July 27 approval of a $280,000 SRO agreement with Mid-America Christian University, which also included MACU providing a 1,500-square-foot substation building for the sheriff's office.
Emergency response team approved
At the same meeting, commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding creating a multi-jurisdictional emergency response team. The MOU links the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office, Norman Police Department, Moore Police Department and University of Oklahoma Police Department.
The agreement takes effect once all four agencies have signed and remains in force for one year. No details on the team's specific mission or staffing were included in the agenda materials.
Road maintenance agreement
Commissioners also approved an inter-local agreement with Independent School District No. 40 of Cleveland County for FY 2026-2027 road and parking maintenance at the district's high school. The agreement covers creation, maintenance and resurfacing of streets, parking lots and driveways that connect to the state or county highway system.
The board additionally approved a bid for new law enforcement pursuit vehicles for the sheriff's office and a six-month asphalt materials contract running through Feb. 11, 2027. The multi-agency emergency response team MOU awaits signatures from Norman, Moore and OU police before taking effect.
